Artist's Comments

This is my most recent historical work. I may post some older images at some other point.

It took two weeks for me to make this dress. I deeply despise ALL commercial patterns, therefore this dress was completely hand drafted and draped (also by me).

I designed this dress to look sort of like a female-victorian-tuxedo because I was going to the prom with my friend, and her dress was the colorful one.

The dress is made out of black jaquard with a rose design and white bridal satin. It consists of 7 pieces: chemise, drawers, corset, underskirt, draped skirt, "bustle", and bodice. I'm not too keen on the chemise and drawers; they're not very decorative. I will, however, post pictures of the corset later (gold dupioni silk with black accents).

While I do wish the corset would cinch more (as it only cinches about 10 inches in the waist). I am happy with the overall product of my first Victorian gown.

Edit: The top hat, earrings, brooch, and fan are vintage.

By the way... my camera sucks (i.e. this picture looks like crap^2 in full view) ^_~

Thank you! I think this is probably my favourite historic piece (of my own)

It's very cool!! I make lots of Renaissance stuff. Not sure how accurate most of it is, but it's fun to make and wear to the Ren faires!

I'm definitely going to look at your gowns; I've done 3 renaissance gowns and was supposed to make one for the faire this year... but I just started college so I've been slacking in the sewing department.

I generally go to the Maryland Renaissance Faire (as I live in VA)... but now I'm hooked and I'm looking for other faires to go to.

Very cool!! I usually attend several faires in Michigan, the main one being the Michigan Ren Faire. Most of my stuff is wenchy or fantasy stuff right now. But I have several court gowns that I am working on. Hoping to get one or two of them done in time for my trip to the Ohio Ren Faire at the end of this month! There are work in progress pics in my scraps section for a couple of my court gowns! Can't wait to see more of your work!

i can definitely appriciate all the work you put into that. it came out beautifully. and i have found that commerical patterns usually suck because my body shape isn't what they're designed for

I know exactly what you mean!! They also seem to run small AND the costume patterns (even ones that SHOULD involve corsetry) are design to fit with ease which sometimes ends up looking ridiculous... and they don't use accurate historical construction techniques (ex: some Renaissance patterns use darts; which, if I iremember correctly were not even used till the 19th century)

But now that I'm done bashing patterns.... thank you for the comment! (I'm glad I'm not the only pattern hater)

This is lovely. Good for you making up your own patterns, you end up with beautifully original stuff like this. The tux-dress idea has worked really well
